JMM Volunteers!

Student Volunteers Needed!

The 2010 Joint Mathematics Meetings will be held in San Francisco, January 13-16. This is arguably the most important mathematics conference in the United States attended by more than 6,000 professional mathematicians.

One of the sessions will be devoted to Math Circles for Students and Teachers (see http://www.ams.org/amsmtgs/2124_sigma.html, and go to SIGMAA on Math Circles for Students and Teachers for a description and a detailed schedule).

As part of that session there will be conducted a Demonstration Math Circle (Saturday, January 16, 1:05-2:15 pm, Room 3008, 3rd Floor, Moscone Center, San Francisco) so that meeting participants can see a real circle in action. We will also have the Great Math Wrangle (Saturday, January 16, 2:50- 4:00 pm, same room) to demonstrate to the audience the types of skills that are learned by circle participants (click here to see the description of Math Wrangle and a set of practice problems).

The demonstration circle will have the same form as the circles at San Jose State, except that it will not run for a full two hours and there will be an audience. We need about 20 volunteer students who have participated in math circles before to take part in this demonstration.

If you are interested in participating in one or both of these activities, please contact Tatiana Shubin shubin@math.sjsu.edu immediately.
